Washing a load of laundry If this is the first time you are washing an item, make sure that it is color-fast. Use a white rag or towel with a little detergent to wash a hidden part of the item. If the rag or towel is stained, the item is not color-fast. If an item has stains, use a spot remover or gently apply a small amount of detergent to the stains, then gently scrub the stains with a brush.
